By using a powerful server-side block we are able to
provide a safe Internet environment without restricting
the use of valuable tools such as newsgroups and
chatrooms. Because of the constant changes on the
Internet we cannot guarantee 100% porn-free access, but
we are able to provide 96% efficiency in the filtering
of WWW content, FTP, Newsgroups, and other services.

ICC is the blocking software we are
using to restrict access to offensive Websites, FTP sites,
web-based chat, and newsgroups.
Several standout features separate our blocking technology
from other products designed to restrict access to offensive
online content. Two of the most significant are its exclusive
use of Direct Address
Blocking (DAB)
- blocking sites by their Internet addresses - and a
proprietary technology known as
"the MudCrawler"
- a search array that constantly scans millions of Web
addresses, FTP, web-based chat, and newsgroups for offensive
content.
DAB doesn't rely on keywords - like a
filter - but actually restricts access to an exact Web site or
IP address. These addresses are kept in a massive library
researched and maintained daily. The MudCrawler (also known as
the X2 or chi square array) keeps the library current. It uses
44 criteria to identify "suspect" pornographic sites. Every
day these suspect sites are reviewed by technicians (to insure
the accuracy of the automated selection) and then added to
topical categories (e.g., pornography, hate, gambling, bomb
making, etc.). Finally, the updated categories are prepared to
be automatically downloaded to bright.net's ICC Server.
Only Web Sites on the list are
blocked.
ICC's
proprietary automated MudCrawler searches out pornography and
other types of sites on the Internet using 44 criteria that we
have found to reveal almost all such sites. Those sites not
fitting perfectly are viewed by ICC's "MudCrawler" technicians
for a final decision. Only by automation can the entire
Internet be scanned for URL list block. This prevents the
blocking of medical and research sites.
News group filtering is accomplished in much the same way as
WEB and FTP filtering. The filter sits in the path of network
traffic (between the customer and the Internet) and watches
each connection to news servers by "news-reading" software. It
can block access to news servers as a whole, or block specific
requests for groups. Again, the software checks only requests
for information and not the actual information.
